Like Maud, Betsy wants to be a writer and she practices her storytelling on her friends until she is old enough to write poetry and stories. My Impression: The Betsy-Tacy books grew out of bedtime stories that Maud Hart Lovelace told her daughter Merian about growing up in Mankato, Minnesota at the turn of the century. And they fall in love with the sound of distant Milwaukee, then are delighted to make a new friend, Tib Muller, who has left that melodious city for their own Deep Valley. When Tacy’s baby sister dies, only Betsy is able to console Tacy. They play with paper dolls and color Easter eggs, using the leftover dye to tint sand. They start school together – Tacy is bashful and tries to run home but Betsy runs after her and persuades her to come back to school. Kelly’s unfrosted cake while Betsy told Tacy stories. I noted a 1/2" or less tear on seven pages and a 1 1/4" tear to page 45 (these are all near the gutter). There is a neat gift inscription dated 1945 on the front endpaper. The hinges are wobbly but all of the pages are secure. The covers of the book show some light stains and there is some wear through the cloth covering at the bottom corners, bottom spine ends and a 1/8" patch on the lower left cover near the spine. Hardback book in "Good" condition but MISSING THE DUST JACKET. Copyright page lists no later printings which meets this publisher's criteria for First Edition for this year.
